Stanley Register Online - Mountain Wagons  32 cars listed (possible overlap),  5 outside US Home Last update:
1/21/21

                                                                                                                                                                                                              updates in progress
1909 marked the 100th anniversary of the development of the Stanley Mountain Wagon.
Jim Merrick of the Stanley Museum worked on a commemorative publication,
and the summer 2009 Steam Car Tour in Estes Park attracted
an unprecedented number of Mountain Wagons to one location.

This page gathers all the Mountain Wagon listings from the Register into one place.
As usual, there is missing information on the current locations of cars, and there is the possibility of duplication.
If you can correct or clarify any of this information, please contact me and I'll update this page promptly.

The Mountain Wagon has a strong grip on the imagination of the Stanley community and is of great interest to the public.
As a result, there have been many outstanding re-creations of the Mountain Wagon built over the years.
Beginning in the early 1970s, famed Stanley restorer and creator Carl Amsley built quite a few of these cars.
He began with 12-passenger cars, then switched to 9-passenger cars as he became less interested in working with heavy 30hp parts.
A signature Amsley touch was the use of demountable rims, painted silver.
Others have built beautiful Mountain Wagons in the years since.
As on this entire site, all Stanleys are included regardless of their builders.

You can help to clear up some of the remaining mysteries of existing Mountain Wagons!
Please see the bottom of this page, where working data and questions are gathered - and help me improve the record!
My thanks to Pat Farrell, Tom Marshall, Mike May,
Tim Martin, Jim Keith, James McInnes, Bill Corrin, and Bill Barnes,
who have already provided considerable clarification to the original collection of information.

Built by Bourdon about 1980.  Video of car in operstion is here.  (As a Stanley driving instructor, I feel compelled to take issue with the statement that flames on top and in front are "normal with a Stanley".  Stanley operation does not require any fire outside the burner.)

Working data

A number of inquiries are still awaiting response, but here are a few definite loose ends.

The 1961 Register of Antique Automobiles shows a 1912 Mountain Wagon, fully restored, owned by T. Pabst.
    Which car is this?
In 1972, Joel E. Finn advertised a Mountain Wagon for sale.

Which car is this?
In 2000, a Mountain Wagon was under construction in Ireland.  Ever completed?
In 2004, a 1912-1913 Mountain Wagon was advertised in Elyria, OH, "complete but needs work".

Which car is this?

Numerous mentions have appeared of  Mountain Wagons owned by Carl Amsley.
Listed below, it's difficult to connect them to the existing cars; any help would be appreciated.
